Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University is located on the North Shore of Long Island which is about 55 miles from Manhattan.

What are they looking for?
Successful applicants will typically have:

* High school diploma or equivalent. The average high school GPA is 91 or 3.6
(Regents diploma preferred for NY residents)

* Strong high school academic program that includes:

o 4 units of English
o 4 units of social studies
o 3 units of mathematics (4 units required for engineering)
o 3 units of science (4 units required for engineering)
o 2 or 3 units of a foreign language

* Standardized test scores that indicate the promise of success in a rigorous undergraduate course of study.

The Middle 50% of Our 2009 Enrolled Freshmen Had:

+ SAT Math Scores Between 590 and 680;
+ SAT Critical Reading Scores Between 540 and 630;
+ SAT Writing Scores Between 540 and 630;
+ ACT Scores Between 25 and 29.

* Students who show evidence of leadership, special talents or interests, and other personal qualities through extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and other non-academic pursuits will receive special consideration.

* SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics (Level 1 or Level 2) and one other subject of the student's choice are recommended.
